The Questions

I think there are three meta-physical questions you have to ask yourself. Each question—if you answer “No”—exits the questioning and leaves you with a certain view of reality. The questioning continues so long as the answers are “Yes”, and as you do so you approach a more and more specific concept of “God”.

As discussed next, I think the answers to these questions are not provable by logic or science. The answers depend on how you believe reality works and are matters of faith.

Here are the questions:

  1. Is there a “meta-physical” reality at all (or is the physical all there is)?
  2. If there is a meta-physical reality, is it inhabited by a self-aware being (or beings), or is it just a force or a dimension or something inanimate?
  3. If these meta-physical inhabitants are self-aware, are they self-aware–and concerned with–life in our physical reality?

In other words:

  1. Is there anywhere for “God” to be?
  2. If there is, is there anything there that can think, “I am God”?
  3. If so, is “God” concerned about us?

#1–Is there a meta-physics?

First, let me define what I mean by “meta-physical”.

The world we know, all the matter and energy in the universe, is the physical reality. A meta-physical reality is “beyond” or “above” the physical reality. It would not be something we could perceive. At least not normally! Obviously, to make it worth considering it must be accessible in some fashion that trancends our normal perceptions.

Next, It would seem logical to assume that either it exists or it doesn't. There would seem to be no middle ground.

(It's worth noting that we are assuming a logical principle called “The Excluded Middle”, which some consider debatable. Amplifying the debate, it may well be that the principle is even more contestable when considering meta-physics than it is when considering logic and mathematics.)

In any event, if you decide there is no meta-physical reality, that's it, you're done. The physical world is it. This is all there is!

If you choose to think it's possible there's more to all this than this, then you can keep asking yourself questions about what it might be.

Which brings us to the next question!

#2–Is there a God?

If there is a meta-physical reality of some sort, a natural next question seems whether there's any meta-physical being (or beings). And if there are, what kind of being or beings? You can let your imagination run wild over lots of possibilities!

According to most Christian religions, the meta-physical reality consists of a Heaven and a Hell (and for some a Limbo). Those places are inhabited by native beings (such as Angels or Demons) as well as the souls of former inhabitants of the physical reality. And of course they are also inhabited by Uber-beings (God and Satan) who reign over their respective domains.

For a very different example, the movie STAR WARS gives us “The Force”, which is a meta-physical aspect of reality that is not God-like at all. Interestingly, even The Force embodies the idea of Good and Evil–a characteristic that seems common in meta-physics.

Other religions imagine the meta-physical reality in different ways, and as just noted, many–if not all of them–embody some concept of Good and Evil. Also interesting is that nearly all–again, if not all–societies have at least one Religion. I know of no Atheist societies.

Or perhaps our reality could be a mathematical simulation run by some other beings. Or maybe another movie had it right: THE MATRIX! The possibilities are endless.

#3–Does God care about us?

This may be the hardest question to answer with a “Yes”. It seems pretty easy (at least to me) to believe in a meta-physics, and it seems at least possible there are some sort of meta-beings.

But making the leap of Faith to thinking those beings believe in and care about me is quite a leap! (Of course, that's what Faith is all about!)

I will confess that I am often dubious about this one myself. The thing is there have been many times in my life for which one explanation for events is that “God took care of me”. On the other hand, “coincidence” and “luck” are other possible explanations. The thing that has intregued me in my life is the nature and frequency of the “coincidences”.

In any event, as with all these questions, the answer is up to you to decide!
